Tunisia is the most interesting thing on our programme at the moment, and the least known. In seven days you stand inside a mosque that has been in continuous use since the ninth century, walk into a Roman amphitheatre that seated thirty-five thousand people, see what is left of Carthage, and finish in a clifftop village painted blue and white above the Mediterranean.
It is an easy country to travel in and a genuinely good-value one. We run it as a small group with a guide throughout, and departures are limited.

Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Tunis, transfer to your hotel and settle in.
Overnight: Tunis
Down the coast to Mahdia — the old harbour, the Fatimid gate and the Mediterranean shoreline.
Overnight: Mahdia
Kairouan, one of the oldest Islamic cities in North Africa, and its Great Mosque — the prayer hall alone is worth the journey.
Overnight: Kairouan
The Roman amphitheatre at El Djem, which seated thirty-five thousand people and is still standing, then on to Sousse and its medina.
Overnight: Sousse
The ruins of Carthage above the bay, then the blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said for the afternoon.
Overnight: Tunis
The medina of Tunis, the Bardo collection and time for shopping.
Overnight: Tunis
Transfer to the airport for the return flight.

Because it gives you Roman ruins, early Islamic architecture, a Mediterranean coast and excellent food in a single week, without the crowds or the cost of southern Europe. It is the trip we recommend to people who have already done the obvious destinations.
At least eight weeks. The Tunisia visa takes time to process and this is a small group departure with limited seats.
Yes — Tunisian food is North African and largely halal, with plenty of grilled meat, bread and stews. Our hotels are briefed on the group.
