Egypt Tour Guide: Cairo, the Pyramids and Sharm El Sheikh

How many days you actually need, what to see in Cairo and Giza, whether to add the Red Sea, and how the visa works from Pakistan.

Egypt Tour Guide: Cairo, the Pyramids and Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt — Misr — is one of the most rewarding trips available from Pakistan, and one of the easiest to get wrong on your own. This guide covers how long to allow, what to prioritise, and where a group package earns its cost.

How long you need

Six days covers Cairo and Giza properly: the Pyramids and the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo and Khan el-Khalili, with a free day.

Eight days lets you add Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea — history first, sea afterwards, which is the combination most families ask for.

Ten days or more opens up a Nile programme, taking in Luxor and Aswan. Excellent, and a different order of cost.

What does not work is trying to do Cairo, the Nile and the Red Sea in under a week. You will spend the trip in transit.

Cairo and Giza: what to prioritise

The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Half a day, ideally in the morning before the heat. The panoramic viewpoint is worth the extra stop.

The Egyptian Museum. Half a day. Going without a guide is a mistake — the collection is vast and poorly labelled by modern standards, and an Egyptologist turns a warehouse of objects into a story.

Old Cairo. The historic mosques and churches, and the layers of the city’s history in a walkable area.

Khan el-Khalili. The bazaar. Go in the late afternoon and haggle without embarrassment; it is expected.

Why a guide matters more in Egypt than most places

Standing in front of the Pyramids is remarkable regardless. But almost everything else in Egypt requires interpretation to mean anything — the museum in particular. A licensed Egyptologist is the single highest-value inclusion in an Egypt package, and it is one of the reasons we run Egypt as a group rather than selling it as flights and hotels.

Visa and documents

Egypt requires a visa for Pakistani passport holders. On group packages the travel agent arranges it as part of the booking. You will need a passport valid at least six months beyond travel, your CNIC, and passport photographs. Check whether the visa fee is included in the price quoted or charged separately — practice varies between agencies.

When to go

October to April is the comfortable season. December and January are cool in Cairo and pleasantly warm at Sharm — which is why our winter Egypt departures pair the two.

Summer is punishing inland. Unless the dates are fixed for you, avoid June to August for Cairo and Upper Egypt.

Adding the Red Sea

Sharm El Sheikh is the usual choice: an hour by air from Cairo, warm sea through the winter, and snorkelling that is genuinely world class. For a family trip it solves the problem every history holiday eventually hits — children reach their limit of ruins somewhere around day four.

Practicalities

  • Tipping is embedded in Egyptian service culture. Carry small notes.
  • Bargaining is expected at bazaars, not in shops with marked prices.
  • Water: bottled only.
  • Dress: modest is comfortable and appropriate, particularly at religious sites.
  • Currency: the Egyptian pound. Change at banks or hotels rather than on the street.

Group departures

Our Egypt groups run mainly between late August and December, either as a six-day Cairo and Giza programme or as a longer itinerary adding Sharm El Sheikh. Visa, hotels, transport, guided sightseeing and entrance fees are included; ask us for the current calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Six days covers Cairo and Giza without rushing. If you also want the Red Sea or a Nile programme, allow eight to ten — six days will not stretch to both.
